Wealth Differences

Inequality is the defintion of rich and poor.

These 3 videos show inequality in America and in Canada. It also shows the wealth gap between rich people and poor people.
In the first video it shows America's wealth gap. In the first video it shows that the middle class are getting poorer that getting richer.

In the second video its the trailer for the documentary Inequality for all. The film examines the wealth in gap in the United States. The film is presented by american economist, author and professor Robert Reich.

In the third video it is about two schools in Calgary in two different neighbor hoods. One neighbor hood Aspen Woods, the average price of the houses in Aspen Woods is 1.2 million dollars. The most expensive house in Calgary is worth 12 million dollars. The most expensive school in Aspen Woods, is Webber Academy a private boarding school. In Webber academy you have to give a tution to enroll in the school the enrollment fees are:
Elementary: $16,300
Secondary:  $18,000

The second neighbor is the poorest one in Calgary. If you saw in the video where he was driving in the neighbor hood, you could see that in every street there where cash store, And it was like that because the people in that neighborhood need money. In there Household Income it is $40,000, yet the Aspen woods household income is 200,000. Patrick Airlie School is in the poorest neighborhood in Calgary. Jean Johnson, is the principle, of Patrick Airlie School. In the video it shows that they don't get some of the cool things that the Webber Academy receive. It also shows that the Webber Academy has a theater, but the Patrick Airlie School doesn't even have an art room. They share there cafeteria with there gym.

December Report Card: Self Assessmeny

             December Report Card: Self Assessment

1.) Social Studies:

In social studies we are learning about some big issues that are happening in our world today such as; Girl Rising, The Ottawa shooting, When Canada wanted to got war against Isis, and Inequality. In social studies the thing that i like is when we blog  because it is different then our other classes. In La,Math, and Science we sit in desks and write.I like writing  but blogging is something new that we haven't done in school.

2.) Work Habits:

Meeting expectations

I think my work habits are Meeting Expectations because  Im on task most of the time and off task sometimes, But i manage to post all my blog posts in the time given. In social we get to sit in a circular table with anyone we want I sit with HeatherAnjiNaheedAndrea. I like sitting with them because they are fun and my friends, But sometimes they throw me off task.We sit in groups to help each other out with embedding videos, getting links, and getting information .

3.) Communication:

Meeting Expectations

I think my reading and writing skills are Meeting Expectations because i have difficulty on  getting paragraphs on my posts. I collect information by surfing through the web, asking my friends for some information, watching documentaries and videos. I try not to copy and paste, but arrange it in  my own words. I think throughout the 3 months we have been blogging my reading and writing skills have changed.

*These are a couple of links to my blogs that i am proud of.
Ottawa Shooting
Sentence Structure
Detroit tigers vs. Baltimore Orioles
Girl Rising Wadley's story

4.) What's Next?

In Social I want to learn about Japan, The Aztec's, and The Renaissance. I also want to learn more about Canada's history. In my bloging i want to improve on writing bigger paragraphs, finding more information, and finishing my blogs quicker.

Why Do We Remember?

  • We remember the soldiers who fought for our freedom.
  • We remember the efforts and sacrifices of Canadians.
  • We remember the people who put there lives on the line.
  • We remember the cause of peace and freedom.

This is a famous war poem that most people recite on remembrance day, it was written during the first world war by lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. He was inspired to write it on May 3, 1915, after  presiding over the funeral of a friend and fellow soldier Alexis Helmer.

Vertical view of Manhattan

I picked this picture from HistoryInPics because it looked very cool to me. The way Andreas Feininger took this photo interested me because it shows the tall buildings and the ships that are by the dock. I like how the everything in the photo is black and white.

Canada Goes To War Against ISIS

Canada is going of to war against ISIS. On Tuesday, October 7, at the House of Commons Canadian Prime Minister Stephan Harper announced for a vote to choose between going to war against ISIS or not going to war. The vote to launch the combat mission came to the end at 157-134.

The Liberals and The NDP were opposed. The Conservative independent MP Brent Rathgeber and Green MP Bruce Hyer agreed for the combat mission. Prime Minister Stephan Harper has decided to send 6 CF-18 fighter jets to the mission in the middle east. At the moment Stephan Harper has confirmed only 26 soldiers rather then 69 troops.
my opinion on this idea for canada  to go to war isn't good because isis might send someone to bomb canada.

Ottawa Shooting

Kevin Vickers
Nathan Cirillo guarding the
 Canadian national war memorial
On Wednesday October 22 2014 There was a gunman who entered Canada's National War Memorial in Ottawa just before 10 am E.T. The gunman shot a reservist guard (Cpl Nathan Cirillo) In the chest while he was guarding the Canadian National War Memorial. After he shot cpl.Nathan Cirillo the attacker hijacked a car, where he drove to the Parliament buildings and entered Centre Block and started shooting. Until a sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers shot him down.

Condolences to family of the soldier killed, & prayers for the Parliamentary guard wounded. Canada will not be terrorized or intimidated.
— Jason Kenney ن (@kenneyjasonOctober 22, 2014

Jason Kenny Canada's Minister of Employment and Social Development was the first person to announce Nathan Cirillo's death. The police have identified the attacker as ''Micheal Zehaf-Bibeau''.
Micheal Zehaf-Bibeau

My opinion on  Kevin Vickers when he shot Micheal Zehaf-Bibeau is that if he didn't shoot him, he would have killed more people. Although i also think that there should have been another way of dealing with it instead of killing because no one deserves to be killed in that manner.

This is an email from Micheal Zehaf-Bibeau's parents apologizing for what has been done.

''Hi, I am writing this note on behalf of my husband and myself. No words can express the sadness we are feeling at this time. We are so sad that a man lost his life. He has lost everything and he leaves behind a family that must feel nothing but pain and sorrow. We send our deepest condolences to them although words seem pretty useless. We are both crying for them. We also wish to apologize for all the pain, fright and chaos he created. We have no explanation to offer. I am mad at our son, I don't understand and part of me wants to hate him at this time. You write that our son was vulnerable, we don't know, we [he] was lost and did not fit in. I his mother spoke with him last week over lunch, I had not seen him for over five years before that. So I have very little insight to offer. We don't wish to be part of any media circus, we don't think it will add anything to the conversation. Please respect our privacy although many may not feel we deserve any.… Once again we are so sorry."— Susan Bibeau and Bulgasem Zehaf

Below i have put in some video from parliament hill while the shooting was taking place

Sentences Structures

In yesterdays class we learned about Sentence Structures. We learnt about independent and dependent clauses.
*An independent clause can stand alone as a simple sentence because it has a subject, a predicate and expresses a complete thought. Eg~ The boy ran home.
*An dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence because it is either missing a subject, predicate or a complete thought. Eg~ After the boy ran home...
 We also learnt about 4 different ways of writing a sentence such as;
*A simple sentence~ is made up of one independent clause
*A compound sentence~ is made up of two or more independent clauses,
a comma and a linking word. Eg~ The boy ran home, so he could do his chores.
*A complex sentence is made up of one independent clause, one dependent clause, a linking word and sometimes a comma. Eg~ After the boy ran home, he did his chores.
*A compound-complex sentence is made up of at least one independent clause and two or more dependent clauses. Eg~ After the boy ran home, he did his chores, even though he really didn't want to.

Also we learnt that every sentence must have;
*A Subject~ what the sentence is about. Eg~ an animal, a place, a person, or an idea. Eg~ The boy..
*A Predicate~  the part of a sentence containing a verb and stating something about the subject. Eg~ ...ran home
*A Complete thought~ expresses a subject and a verb. Eg~

Below is a list of the most commonly used linking words.

*while *so that

*after *unless

*though *since

*because *although

*as soon as *if

*whereas *until

*wherever *where

*when *even though

*before* *whether

*as

Girl Rising Wadley's Story

After watching the Girl Rising documentary, Wadley's story interested me most. Wadley is a 7 year old girl who lives with her mom in Haiti Wadley went to school everyday before, her whole world came crashing down,

Haiti's tragic earthquake destroyed her home and school. But Wadley's desire to learn didn't stop her after the earthquake. One day while Wadley was fetching water she passed by a tent school where she saw some of her old classmates and her teacher. She ran straight home and told her mother about the new tent school, however her mother told her that they don't have any money for her to go to school.

Everyday she went to the tent school, even though the teacher sent her away. Although one day when Wadley went to the tent school her teacher asked her if her mother paid and she said no, she told her to leave but Wadley said, ''I will come back every day until I can stay."

Girl Rising

In Social Studies we are watching this movie because it help us understand human rights and poverty. This documentary shows us that there are girls in this world that want to learn but cannot. This movie relates to social studies because it talks about human rights.  . These 9 girls show us that they want to go to school but they have problems that  keep them from being educated. I think that every person in this world should be able to go to school and be educated!
